The “ONLY SKIN DEEP?” Campaign
May 1, 2004 –to- May 31, 2009

Purpose: To introduce the new national Skin Cancer Awareness ribbon symbol throughout the State of Utah (and nationally) as skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed—and the most preventable cancer in the world! In fact, more than one-million Americans are diagnosed with skin cancer each year, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Did you know that every five minutes a woman in the U.S. is diagnosed and every hour, someone dies? Skin cancer is an un-necessary epidemic! It is time to take the crusade against this all-too-common cancer to new heights; to empower others in taking control over their skin health. Thus, we have created the new and official national Skin Cancer Awareness ribbon to help rally wide-spread support for skin cancer prevention, much akin to how the pink Breast Cancer Awareness ribbon has for breast cancer. To learn more about the “Only Skin Deep?” Campaign, visit our Web-site dedicated solely to the national Skin Cancer Awareness ribbon symbol at www.skincancerribbon.org. which will be officially launched in March 2005.

What has been done thus far: Since launching the “Only Skin Deep?” Campaign in May 2004, we have worked with (former) Governor of the State of Utah Olene S. Walker in getting an official Declaration signed at the State Capitol. The Mayor of Provo City ( Utah) and Orem City ( Utah) both signed proclamations, we have been featured on various news programs and in various news articles both nationally and locally, among of which include Fox 13 and U.S. Environmental News. Additionally, we have visited several college campuses such as Utah Valley State College, Brigham Young University, and Salt Lake Community College. Additionally we were invited to participate in the grand opening of the Huntsman Cancer Hospital with Jon M. Huntsman, Senator Orrin Hatch, and the President Gordon B. Hinckley of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Despite having reached more than 118,000,000 individuals since January 1, 2004 (as of August 1, 2004), there is still much work to be done to introduce our official national Skin Cancer Awareness ribbon to the public, and to spread the message of skin cancer prevention education. What will YOU do to help us in this crusade?
